John was born in 1749 in Rainford and his baptism took place on March 3rd, 1749 at Rainsford Chapel (Independent).1  John's father was Jacob Mather and his mother was Margaret (Margaritt) Hill. He had three sisters named Mary, Ellen and Alice.  He was the oldest of the four children.
