John was born on June 4th, 1878 in Cheetham and his baptism took place on July 14th, 1878 at Manchester Cathedral.1 2  John's father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Lambie.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Ann Wilson. He had four brothers and three sisters, named David, James, William, Alexander, Elizabeth, Harriet and Marion.

‌John and Stafford were married.  They had a son named James.  There are no more children.
