The Will of Joseph Woodward late of Neston in the County of Chester who died 15 October 1890 at Neston was proved at Chester by Maria Woodward of Bridge Street, Neston Widow the Relict and John Woorward of Neston, Builder the son the Executors.
General Notes
In 1841 Joseph (15, Shoe Maker) and John (14) are with their sisters and parents James (a coal miner) and Ann at Gorston, near Hinderton and Little Neston. This 1841 census is missing from Ancestry.
4 April 1847, Joseph Woodward a shoe maker, son of James (also a shoe maker) married Maria Wynne daughter of James Wynne at Liverpool, St Peter.
In 1851, Joseph is described as a shoemaker. He became a post messenger in 1854 and was a postman until he died in 1890.
In 1861, Joseph and Maria (36 & 37) were living on the Liverpool Road, Neston. Joseph was a Rural Post Office Messenger.
In 1871, Joseph continued to make shoes and boots, being described as a "letter carrier and boot maker".
Joseph was a Druid. For 25 years he acted in the capacity as secretary to the Neston Lodge of the Ancient Order of Druids.
In his obituary, he was described as an old Nestonian, having served the public in various capacities, stopping work in 1886 due to Ill health.

In 1847 when married in Liverpool and 1851, Joseph was a Master Shoe Maker. His son James was aged 3 and listed as a Shoemaker's Son.
James must have worked part time after becoming a post messenger in 1854. He was a letter carrier and boot maker in 1871.Occupation Notes
Josh Woodward was appointed poatman, pay 12/- in 1854, appointed Neston: Chester to Willaston.
In 1961 he was a Rural Post Office Messanger, Liverpool Road, Neston.
In 1881 he was listed as a postman but stopped work through Ill Health in 1886.Occupation Notes
Obituary states he collected taxes from 1869 till present day.
From 1841 Joseph's occupation was Shoemaker in Little Neston.3From 1847 to after 1871 his occupation was Shoemaker part time in Brimstage.4From June 16th, 1854 his occupation was Postmaster part time in Neston. He retired in 1886.5From 1869 his occupation was Tax Collector part time for Government, in Neston. He died in 1890 while still employed there.6
