William's father was Thomas Tomlinson and his mother was Elizabeth Lloyd. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Richard, James, Charles, Mary, Sarah, Ruth, Elizabeth, Martha and Eleanor.  He was the fourth youngest of the twelve children.
