Marjorie was born in December 1910 in Prestwich.¹

Marjorie's father was William Thorpe and her mother was Rosaline Jane May. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Thorpe and Nancy Mather. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Harold, Herbert, Florence and Dorothy. She was the youngest of the six children.
