Florence's father was William Thorpe and her mother was Rosaline Jane May. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Thorpe and Nancy Mather. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Harold, Herbert, Dorothy and Marjorie. She was the oldest of the six children.
