Herbert's father was William Thorpe and his mother was Rosaline Jane May. His paternal grandparents were Robert Thorpe and Nancy Mather. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Harold, Florence, Dorothy and Marjorie. He was the fourth oldest of the six children. He died as an infant in October 1905 in Manchester.

- In 1911, herbert was added to the census, but then crossed out. He was the one child of six that had died by 1911.
