Harold's father was William Thorpe and his mother was Rosaline Jane May. His paternal grandparents were Robert Thorpe and Nancy Mather. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Herbert, Florence, Dorothy and Marjorie. He was the third oldest of the six children.
