Peter was born in 1826 in Tonge-with-Haulgh and his baptism took place on March 5th, 1826 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Peter's father was John Settle and his mother was Betty Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Martin Madther and Sarah Kirkman. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Michael, Richard, Nancy, Alice, Alice and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the eight children.
