Alice was born in September 1836 in Little Bolton and her baptism took place on September 25th, 1836 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Alice's father was John Settle and her mother was Betty Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Martin Madther and Sarah Kirkman. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Peter, John, Michael, Richard, Nancy, Alice and Elizabeth.  She was the fifth oldest of the eight children.  She died at the age of 1 in February 1838 in Little Lever.  Her burial was on February 6th, 1838 at St. Peter's (Bolton).2 3
