Michael was born in 1832 in Tonge-with-Haulgh and his baptism took place on September 21st, 1832 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Michael's father was John Settle and his mother was Betty Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Martin Madther and Sarah Kirkman. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Peter, John, Richard, Nancy, Alice, Alice and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
