John was a miner (collier) at Haulgh and Little Bolton when the first children were baptised. In 1838 - 1840 John and Betty are shown at Little Lever.
In 1841, John and Betty Settle (both 35) were at Hall Lane, Little Lever with Peter (15), John (13), Nancy (10), Alice (3) and Richard (2).
Betty died and John married Alice Meadows in 1849 at Manchester Cathederal.
In 1851 John and Alice (48 & 53) were farming 48 acres at Little Lever with Alice, Richard and Elizabeth (13, 10 and 8) and three step-daughters; Mary, Martha and Catherine (17, 13 & 4).
In 1861 John and Alice (58 & 64) nee MANN were at Little Lever with daughter Catherine (14).
