Richard was born in June 1840 in Little Lever and his baptism took place on June 21st, 1840 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Richard's father was John Settle and his mother was Betty Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Martin Madther and Sarah Kirkman. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Peter, John, Michael, Nancy, Alice, Alice and Elizabeth.  He was the second youngest of the eight children.
