Mary was born in 1830 in Saddleworth and her baptism took place there on September 5th, 1830.1 2  Mary's father was Noah Schofield and her mother was Mary Lees. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, James, Charles, Wright, Joseph, Ann, Julia, Harriet and Eliza.  She was the eighth oldest of the ten children.
