Joseph was born in 1828 in Saddleworth.  Joseph's father was Noah Schofield and his mother was Mary Lees. He had four brothers and five sisters, named John, James, Charles, Wright, Ann, Julia, Mary, Harriet and Eliza.  He was the seventh oldest of the ten children.
