William's father was William Ramsden and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Hamer. His paternal grandparents were <Unknown> and Matty Ramsden. He had five brothers and five sisters, named John, James, Alfred, Fred, Ernest, Martha, Sarah, Emma, Alice and Alice. He was the eighth oldest of the eleven children.
