Martha was born in 1856 in Turton.1  Martha's father was William Ramsden and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Hamer.  Her paternal grandparents were <Unknown> and Matty Ramsden. She had six brothers and four sisters, named John, James, William, Alfred, Fred, Ernest, Sarah, Emma, Alice and Alice.  She was the third oldest of the eleven children.
