John was born in 1853 in Turton.1  John's father was William Ramsden and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Hamer.  His paternal grandparents were <Unknown> and Matty Ramsden.  John Nelson and Sarah Ramsden were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had five brothers and five sisters, named James, William, Alfred, Fred, Ernest, Martha, Sarah, Emma, Alice and Alice.  He was the oldest of the eleven children.
