Ernest's father was William Ramsden and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Hamer. His paternal grandparents were <Unknown> and Matty Ramsden. He had five brothers and five sisters, named John, James, William, Alfred, Fred, Martha, Sarah, Emma, Alice and Alice. He was the youngest of the eleven children.
