Margaret's father was Joseph Oxton and her mother was Mary Lewis. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph Oxton and Rachel Williams. She had seven brothers and a sister, named John, Joseph, George, Joseph, Robert, William, Thomas and Mary. She was the second oldest of the nine children.
