George's father was Joseph Oxton and his mother was Mary Lewis. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Oxton and Rachel Williams. He had six brothers and two sisters, named John, Joseph, Joseph, Robert, William, Thomas, Margaret and Mary. He was the fourth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 71 in December 1935 in Liverpool.²
