John's father was Joseph Oxton and his mother was Mary Lewis.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Oxton and Rachel Williams. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, George, Joseph, Robert, William, Thomas, Margaret and Mary.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 74 in January 1932 in Liverpool.
