Joseph was born on July 26th, 1867 in Liverpool and his baptism took place on August 11th, 1867 at St. Peter (Liverpool).1 2  Joseph's father was Joseph Oxton and his mother was Mary Lewis.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Oxton and Rachel Williams. He had six brothers and two sisters, named John, Joseph, George, Robert, William, Thomas, Margaret and Mary.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.

‌Joseph and Elizabeth were married in a religious ceremony on August 7th, 1893 in Liverpool.3  They had four sons and two daughters, named Joseph, George, Wallace, John, Lilian and Florence.
