Sarah was born in 1814 in Outwood and her baptism took place on January 2nd, 1814 at St. Saviour (Ringley).1 2  Sarah's father was Thomas Openshaw and her mother was Jane Tomlinson. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named John, Thomas, Job, Sarah, Mary, Hannah, Catherine, Harriet, Elizabeth and Catherine.  She was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
