Catherine was born in 1828 in Farnworth.1  Catherine's father was Thomas Openshaw and her mother was Jane Tomlinson. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named John, Thomas, Job, Sarah, Mary, Hannah, Catherine, Sarah, Harriet and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the eleven children.
