Mary was born on May 12th, 1804 in Little Lever and her baptism took place on June 24th, 1804 at the St. Matthew (Little Lever).1  Mary's father was Thomas Openshaw and her mother was Jane Tomlinson. She had three brothers and seven sisters, named John, Thomas, Job, Sarah, Hannah, Catherine, Sarah, Harriet, Elizabeth and Catherine.  She was the second oldest of the eleven children.
