John's father was Thomas Openshaw and his mother was Jane Tomlinson. He had two brothers and eight sisters, named Thomas, Job, Sarah, Mary, Hannah, Catherine, Sarah, Harriet, Elizabeth and Catherine.  He was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.
