John was born in 1818 in Outwood and his baptism took place on June 28th, 1818 at St. Saviour (Ringley).1  John's father was Thomas Openshaw and his mother was Jane Tomlinson. He had two brothers and eight sisters, named Thomas, Job, Sarah, Mary, Hannah, Catherine, Sarah, Harriet, Elizabeth and Catherine.  He was the seventh oldest of the eleven children.
