William was born on August 1st, 1879 in Rhodes (nr. Middleton) and his baptism took place there on August 24th, 1879.¹

William's father was Joseph Miller and his mother was Jane Mather. His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Eliza Graham. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Harry, John, Fred, Alfred, Alice, Mary, Eliza, Maria and Florence. He was the third oldest of the ten children.
