William's father was George Mather and his mother was Esther Glaizbrook. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Rigby. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, Samuel, George, Ellen, Mary, Alice and Emma. He was the oldest of the eight children.
