George's father was George Mather and his mother was Esther Glaizbrook. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Rigby. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, George, Samuel, Ellen, Mary, Alice and Emma. He was the youngest of the eight children. He died in 1869 in Bolton.¹
