Ellen's father was George Mather and her mother was Esther Glaizbrook.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Rigby. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, George, Samuel, George, Mary, Alice and Emma.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.  She died at the age of 1 in 1858 in Bolton.¹
