Emma's father was George Mather and her mother was Esther Glaizbrook. Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Rigby. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, George, Samuel, George, Ellen, Mary and Alice. She was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
