Violet's father was Edward Mather and her mother was Sarah Ellen Taberner.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Jane Edwards. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Harold, Albert, John, Lilly, Rose and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the seven children. She had a half-sister named Maggie.  She died in 1894 in Burnley.¹
