Robert Mather

Robert was born on September 2nd, 1797 in Withnell and his baptism took place on September 24th, 1797 at St. Laurence (Chorley).¹²

  There is no Turton baptism for Robert, and for a time was believed to be the son of James Mather and Betty Knowles (still possible) because he was living at Top O'th' Lane (the lane leading to Top of Turton) in 1827 and Cock's Green in 1833-1836. Both residences are adjacent to Goose Cote Hill where James and Betty lived. However, 1851 and 1861 census shows he was born at Withnell, near Tockholes.
  
  It was then thought likely Robert is the son of Robert and Peggy from Tockholes, with Peggy being his first daughter. He would have been baptised at Walmsley Presbyterian, but the records for this period are lost. However, they already had a Robert (1792-1816), so cant be theirs. Instead, Peggy could be named from Ann's parents (Thomas & Peggy).
  
  There's a Robert, baptised 5 Nov 1809 at Brindle, son of Jonathan and Catherine Mather of Withnell, probably related, but this Robert is 13 years too young to match the census. The 1797 baptism son of Ellen however is a perfect fit!

Robert's father was <unknown> and his mother was Ellen Mather. He had a sister named Catherine. He was the older of the two known children. He died at the age of 71 in November 1868 in Turton. The funeral was arranged by J. O. K. Spencer Incumbent. His burial was on December 1st, 1868 at St. Anne (Turton).³⁴⁵

General Notes
- Robert's mother was Ellen Mather of Withnell (bastard as father unknown).
  
  In 1826, Robert moved to (Cock's) Cox Green, Turton and married Ann Ainsworth. They has their children baptised at Walmsley Presbyterian Chapel by William Probert.
  
  In 1827 when Peggy was baptised they were at Top o'th Lane, Turton (near Cock's Green).
  
  In 1841, Robert, a Stone Quarryman, and Ann (40 & 35) are at Cox Green (near Dunscar), Turton with Peggy, Mary and John (13, 8 & 5). With them (or more likely neighbours) were James (45, Weaver) and Samuel (14, Carter) Longworth.
  
  In 1851, Robert and Ann (53 & 48) are at Cox Green, Turton with Peggy, Mary, John, James and Sarah (22, 18, 15, 8, 3)
  
  In 1861, Robert and Ann (63 & 55) are still at Cox Green, Turton with Mary, James and Sarah (22, 18 & 13)
  
  Cock's Green later known as Cox Green. Cox Green Farm is on the East side of Darwen Road, with Mather Fold opposite, on the West side.

  From 1841 to after 1863 his occupation was Stone Quarryman in Turton.

    - A Stone Quarry man in 1841,51 ("Quarrier" in 1861), living at Cox Green (1841, 1851 and 1861). Also a Quarryman when daughters Peggy married in 1852 and Mary married in 1863.
