Harold was born in 1887 in Farnworth.1  Harold's father was Edward Mather and his mother was Sarah Ellen Taberner.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Jane Edwards. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Albert, John, Lilly, Violet, Rose and Mary.  He was the oldest of the seven children. He had a half-sister named Maggie.
