Edward was born in 1862 in Rumworth and his baptism took place on October 19th, 1862 at St. Mary (Deane).1 2  Edward's father was John Mather and his mother was Jane Edwards.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Ann Ainsworth. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, Hugh, Ernest, Mary, Mary and Catherine.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 62 in 1924 in Bolton.3
