James was born on November 30th, 1860 in Darwen and his baptism took place on January 27th, 1861 at Egerton.1 2  James' father was John Mather and his mother was Jane Edwards.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Ann Ainsworth. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Edward, Hugh, Ernest, Mary, Mary and Catherine.  He was the oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 1 in March 1862 in Turton.1
