Mary was born in 1870 in Little Bolton.1  Mary's father was John Mather and her mother was Jane Edwards.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Ann Ainsworth. She had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Edward, Hugh, Ernest, Mary and Catherine.  She was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
