Thomas was born on December 24th, 1839 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on April 17th, 1840 at All Saints (Stand).1 2  Thomas' father was James Chadwick Mather and his mother was Sarah Charlton.  His paternal grandparents were Francis Mather and Elizabeth Chadwick. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Sarah, Francis, James, Ann and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 1 on March 19th, 1841.
