Thomas was born in 1857 in Tyldesley.1  Thomas' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Ellen Watson.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Harrison. He had a brother and four sisters, named John, Amelia, Ann, Kate and Ellen.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
