John was born in 1853 in Tyldesley.1  John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Ellen Watson.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Harrison. He had a brother and four sisters, named Thomas, Amelia, Ann, Kate and Ellen.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
