Ellen was born in 1860 in Tyldesley.1  Ellen's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Ellen Watson.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Harrison. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Amelia, Ann and Kate.  She was the youngest of the six children.
