Kate was born in 1855 in Tyldesley.1  Kate's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Ellen Watson.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Harrison. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Amelia, Ann and Ellen.  She was the third youngest of the six children.
