Thomas was born on February 4th, 1855 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on February 4th, 1855 in Stand.1  Thomas' father was John Mather and his mother was Lucy Hilton.  His paternal grandparents were James Madther and Mary Walker. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Lewis, Wilson, James, John, Mary, Sally, Eliza, Jane, Alice, Rachel and Elizabeth.
