James was born on April 28th, 1846 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on July 12th, 1846 in Stand.1  James' father was John Mather and his mother was Lucy Hilton.  His paternal grandparents were James Madther and Mary Walker. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Lewis, Wilson, John, Thomas, Mary, Sally, Eliza, Jane, Alice, Rachel and Elizabeth.
