John was born on February 17th, 1848 in Elton and his baptism took place on April 2nd, 1848 in Stand.1  John's father was John Mather and his mother was Lucy Hilton.  His paternal grandparents were James Madther and Mary Walker. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Lewis, Wilson, James, Thomas, Mary, Sally, Eliza, Jane, Alice, Rachel and Elizabeth.
