Alice was born on June 8th, 1840 in Whitefield and her baptism took place on June 14th, 1840 in Stand.1  Alice's father was John Mather and her mother was Lucy Hilton.  Her paternal grandparents were James Madther and Mary Walker. She had five brothers and six sisters, named Lewis, Wilson, James, John, Thomas, Mary, Sally, Eliza, Jane, Rachel and Elizabeth.
