Thomas was born in 1797 in Astley and his baptism took place on September 2nd, 1797 at St. Stephens (Astley).1  Thomas' father was John Mather and his mother was Ann Eckersley.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and <unknown>. He had five brothers and three sisters, named John, Bould, Bury, Otho, Mary, Rachel, Rachel and Ann.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
