Rachel was born in June 1789 in Astley and her baptism took place on June 13th, 1789 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1 2  Rachel's father was John Mather and her mother was Ann Eckersley.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and <unknown>. She had six brothers and two sisters, named John, Bould, Bury, Otho, Mary, Thomas, Rachel and Ann.  She was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
