Sarah was born on March 8th, 1839 in Bury and her baptism took place on April 14th, 1839 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).1 2  Sarah's father was Samuel Mather and her mother was Ann Butterworth.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. She had three brothers and four sisters, named James, Edward, Alfred, Elizabeth, Mary, Alice and Leah.  She was the third oldest of the eight children.
